Also known as Artemisia Absinthium. Linn. Common Wormwood.

Preparation: Tincture of fresh young leaves and flowers are used.

Absinthium Mother Tincture properties as a tonic, stomachic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, febrifuge and anthelmintic have been established. In phytotherapy, it has also been used to remedy indigestion and gastric pain. Wormwood tea is used as a remedy for labour pain. Recent researches have confirmed its anthelmintic and antimicrobial properties especially against Gram-positive pathogenic bacteria. Clinically it is used with dose-restrain in epileptiform seizures, tremors, giddiness, nervous excitement, sleeplessness, cerebral irritation, and hysterical and infantile spasm. It is known to expel worms, but habitual use of large doses may cause convulsions, insomnia, nausea, nightmare, restlessness, tremors and vertigo. Reports of a condition known as absinthism characterised by restlessness, vomiting, vertigo, tremors and convulsions as toxicity are well managed by homoeopathic doses.

A perfect picture of epileptiform seizure is produced by this drug. Nervous tremors precede attacks. Sudden and severe giddiness, delirium with hallucinations and loss of consciousness. Nervous excitement and sleeplessness. Cerebral irritation, hysterical and infantile spasms come within range of this remedy. Poisoning by mushrooms. Chorea. Tremor. Nervousness, excitement, and sleeplessness in children.

Mind: It is suitable for a state of mind with hallucinations of fearful visions and loss of consciousness with sudden giddiness, loss of memory and sleeplessness. There is an uncontrollable desire to steal things.

Head: Absinthium is useful when there is dizziness with tendency to fall backwards and state of confusion. The child wants the head to be placed low, bites the tongue which protrudes out, pupils dilated unequally with blue face, fixed jaws, and twitching of the face.

Stomach: It is suitable for vomiting sensation, retching and eructations. Stomach bloated with gas with pain around the waist and abdomen.

Chest: Heaviness in the chest and sensation of weight on the chest. The action of the heart is irregular and unstable.

Sexual: It is indicated for loss of spermatic fluid with weak and relaxed parts in males and for premature menopause and pain in the region of right ovary in females.
